Do Christian Marriages Always Last?

Christian marriage is supposed to be a lasting relationship. But statistics shows otherwise. Christian couples line up in counseling rooms, sometimes even in courtrooms because they cannot stand being with the person they marry anymore. That’s a heartbreaking fact. Relationships that are thought to be a good example for other relationships are tearing apart. We can’t blame them, though. They’re also human. And just like any other human being they are prone to commit mistakes.

Why does Christian marriage break up? I don’t now if this is an accurate question but there is something intriguing about Christian couples not standing each other. As Christian they should know better. They were supposed to be guided properly by their pastor or other people around them. They also have available help if they need to. There are also a lot of Christian books and other resources to guide them. The problem could be just like any other problem, human factor.

As human beings we are made with thoughts and feelings. These two along with other factors work hand in hand to come up with choices and decisions. The balance between what you think about something and what you feel about it would determine your choice once faced with difficult problems, especially when there are choices involved. Choosing a partner is one such problem. It is difficult to choose a partner because there are many things to consider.

Sometimes people make criteria to make choices easier. But even with criteria, choosing a partner is still difficult. This may be the reason why in choosing a partner, feeling is more involved. The problem with feelings is that it is not based on facts nor is it guided by principles. Unlike thoughts it is not objective. And worst of all it is not stable. Feelings change. So when a decision is made based more from feelings and the feelings changes, the decision changes with it. Now that’s a big problem for decisions that should be kept for a long time. Marriage is something that should be kept for a lifetime. Therefore, it is not a good idea to use just feelings to decide on who you are going to spend a lifetime with. But the truth is there are more people who decide to get married based on feelings.

There should have been no problem with feelings if it is pure and true. We call that love. Love is a wonderful thing. I know many people will agree with that statement. They said that marriage based on love is a strong marriage. It’s a marriage that stands the tests of time. Christian marriage is supposed to be like that, a marriage that is based on love. But that’s not always the case. There are also Christian marriages that are based on anything but love. This is the relationship that is bound to break up. Any marriage that is based on feelings or thoughts is not stable. They change every now and then because our thoughts change and our feelings change too. So couples need more that rationalizing and feeling when it comes to marriage. They need love to find their way. And as the Bible says: “love never fails.”
